Open Sea Licence

General Information

An Open Sea Licence is required in order to be able to skipper and charter sailing yachts and motor yachts all over the world. We will provide solid training, teaching you the skills required to safely steer a yacht.

Prerequisites:

Minimum age 16 years
In possession of motorboat driving licence (A licence) or sailing licence (D licence)
Open Sea Licence theory exam passed
Confirmed practical experience and sea miles
Emergency response course completed in the past 6 years
Hearing test
Eye test

  • Courses

    The Open Sea Licence Saturday and Wednesday courses take place at the nautically equipped theory premises at the Yachthafen Stampf, Stampfstrasse 1, 8645 Rapperswil-Jona, right beside Lake Zürich.

    To successfully pass your exam, you should expect to do 1-3 hours of homework a week.

  • The lessons

    Our competent and experienced instructors and teachers will impart the required knowledge for the Open Sea Licence (formerly B Licence) with patience and dedication. Any questions that students may have will always be answered during the lesson. We are also available by phone or email to help with any questions or uncertainties after the lesson is over.

  • The exam

    After your theory course, you can choose from several examination dates and locations for the Open Sea Licence (B Licence) theory exam, which is approved by the CCS (Cruising Club of Switzerland). During lessons, we will provide detailed information about exam registration, the exam procedure and requirements, and help you through the process.
  • Private Course

  • Practice

    Once you've passed your theory exam, it's time to get on the water and practise what you've learned! Our Sailing holidays and Training voyages eare particularly suited to help you acquire the necessary practice and experience. After passing your theory exam, you have up to 4 years to gather sea miles and document them in your voyage log for the issuance of your Open Sea License.

    Required minimum experience at sea:

    Sailing yachts: Total 3 week sea journey (18 days at sea); 1000 sea miles, of which 300 sea miles can be taken from earlier experience.

    Motor yachts: Total 2 week sea journey (10 days at sea); 500 sea miles, of which 100 sea miles can be taken from earlier experience.
