To obtain the Swiss boat license for sailing or motorboats on lakes and rivers (Category A/D), you must pass both a theory and a practical exam. Here’s how to proceed:
1. Training
You can begin practical lessons at any time. It is not necessary to have passed the theory exam beforehand, and a learner’s permit is not required. Book a lesson package online, and we will contact you to arrange appointments and further coordination. If you have any questions in advance, feel free to contact us at any time.
2. Theory Exam
You must complete the theory exam before the practical exam, usually in the canton where you live. Therefore, please submit the appropriate form "Registration for Boat License Exam" (see below) to your home canton at the start of your training. You will then be able to choose a date at one of the testing centers to take the theory exam.
To prepare for the theory exam on your own, we recommend online courses/apps with the original exam questions in English, which you can find here.
3. Practical Exam
After passing the theory exam, we will arrange a date for your practical exam with the examination office. Upon request, you can take the practical exam in a canton other than your home canton.
